YOUR GUIDE TO SKIN TYPES VS CONDITIONS

 

Skin type and skin conditions are often categorized together, which can cause you to over or under-treat what’s happening with your skin.

 

First things first, what’s a skin type? 
Simple- it’s what you were born with! Your skin type is mainly affected by your genetics. Skin types can be broken down into 4 categories. These are characterized by oil production & pore size! 

DRY - Lack of moisture, visible dryness, flakiness, and tight pores. In many cases, dry skin is typically caused by external factors such as the weather, low air humidity, hot bathes, and is usually temporary. Not to be mistaken with dehydrated skin- which is a condition. 

Although, not treating (genetic) dry skin with proper care, can lead to skin conditions. Such as dehydration, or more serious conditions such as eczema if not treated correctly. This thin, delicate skin is more prone to flaking, rough texture, and fine lines than others.

OILY - Large pores, oily surface, prone to blackheads, congestion & acne. 

COMBO - A mixture of skin types! One of the most common these days. Typically an oily T-zone and dry around cheek/eye area. 

NORMAL - Minimal pore size, balanced texture, and contains a good balance of sebum. 

 

Now onto skin conditions…
We develop skin conditions over time from lifestyle habits, sun exposure, climate, diet, product usage, etc. Skin conditions can be treated, and can dramatically change your skin appearance over time with the correct treatment. Let’s take a look at some common skin conditions.

Dehydration - Your skin balances oil and water to stay healthy. Dehydration occurs when there is a lack of water, than can make the skin appear dull

Aging Fine lines, wrinkles, loss of elasticity.

Eczema - Patches of red, rough skin that typically flare up when in certain conditions. 

Hyperpigmentation - Dark spots that appear on skin, typically related to extreme sun exposure. 

 

So what does this mean for choosing products for your skin?

For your daily skincare needs and long term maintenance, it is important to understand your current skin type, not to be confused with a present skin condition. 
The difference between skin types and skin conditions comes down to the way it is treated. Your skin type will determine your daily facial routine. The makeup you choose, the skin products you lean towards, and even what you consume. Your basic skincare needs are affected by the type of skin you have.
Skin conditions typically refer to temporary conditions of the body. This can be anything from aging to pregnancy! The main difference is the permanence of skin types vs skin conditions.

 

Don’t know where to start? I’ve added some of my favorite tips for how to correctly treat your skin below!

-Use serums to treat skin conditions 

-Use moisturizers or facial oils to treat your skin type

-If you have oily skin, you can still use cleansing oils & cleansing balms! They will NOT make you more oily. Just be sure to use one for your skin type. I recommend The Sunday Standard oil-to-milk cleansing balm. Gels are also a fabulous option for oily skin. 

-Multi-mask! It is OK to target certain areas! This is one of my favorite application tips. (See photo below)
